Visitor Information
There is no charge to enter the History Museum or Archival Library. Donations are welcome. Special Exhibits and events may require an admission fee or ticket.
The History Museum is currently closed for renovations and exhibit construction. Check back for announcements. The Archival Library remains open.

To arrange an appointment on a Monday or Tuesday, please call 618-656-6569 or email library@madcohistory.org. Appointments are not required on other days of operation but are encouraged if you are traveling from a distance.
Make sure to check the Madison County Historical Society homepage and social media to stay up to date on closures.
Food and drink are not permitted inside the gallery areas of the History Museum.
Screwtop water bottles are permitted inside the Archival Library.
Absolutely! Be sure to tag us on social media.There may be special items, from time to time, that are sensitive in nature or have copyright concerns. These areas will have visible signage.
You do not have to be a member to research at the Archival Library. You are welcome to photograph any items using your smartphone. Staff will photocopy materials for you for a small per-page fee. We will scan items at no cost within reason; a fee will be determined in advance if you require a large number of scans. Scans can be emailed to you or stored on your flash drive. The Archival Library is a single story building with two ADA compliant restrooms. Research areas are available on a first come, first served basis.
The History Museum has a ramp at the entrance. To access the lift to the second floor galleries, guests will need to enter through the door in the Museum Shop. A single person all-gender restroom is also available through the Museum Shop.
The museum and library facilities are not currently available for event rental.
The exhibits at the History Museum are designed to support guests’ independent discovery of history. Docent-led tours are available with prior arrangements.
