Nineteen Century Madison County Resorts

During hot Madison County summers a century ago, if they were wealthy, residents escaped to Wisconsin, Michigan or other northern climes to avoid the warmest weeks of summer. But if they couldn’t afford that, there was always Moellenbrock’s or Bricker and Young’s resorts on Horseshoe Lake where there were hotels, swimming, fishing, and musical entertainments. The Diamond Mineral Springs Health and Summer Resort at Grantfork offered the same amenities but added mineral baths said to cure all kinds of ailments. The restaurant there still serves chicken dinners on Sundays just like they did in 1895. Another popular resort was Clifton Terrace along the bluffs north of Alton that could be reached by train.
